Akureyri Art Museum

This museum opened the galleries on 29th of August in 1993. It is one of the oldest establishments of Akureyri. For the whole of the past 2 decades, this museum has been used as the flagship of Art Canyon. The museum has also played a major role in cultural lifestyle of the Akureyri people being the first institution from the outside of Reykjavik to deal particularly with visual arts. The museum is just at the heart of the town.

The Theater Company

This Theatre Company is regarded as a society and for one to become a member, the individual or the legal entity must have interests in acting and also should be operating something like a theatre in Akureyri. The Annual General meeting is usually in November, but meetings are also held at other times, like to promote schedule for every year. The members are usually entitled to enjoy some special prices for the seasonal tickets and will normally receive the newsletters of the operations.

Art and Design Walk

Akureyri has very nice design walks and art. You can have the privilege of visiting exclusively the local artists of Akureyri and interacting with them. You can also have a walk through the Akureyri Centre; visit their workshops, the handcraft stores, the northern Iceland designs which are of various kinds and materials.

Arts Alley

The Arts Alley refers to the nickname that was given to a cluster of artistic and cultural institutions lining Kaupvangsstræti. The Arts Alley is the place you will Akureyri Art Museum, Akureyri School of Visual Arts, the Kaktus performance-space and also various studios and galleries for artists. Every gallery normally opens a new show during the first weekend of every month.

Gallery Box

The Gallery Box of Akureyri is run and managed by The Visual Artists Society. This Gallery serves as the residence of this society. However, the other function of this Gallery Box is for exhibition of the latest trends in the world of visual art and also focuses on the young, undiscovered talents and their jobs.

The Motorcycle Museum of Iceland

This newest museum was opened in 2011, month of May, and covers the long history of the motorcycles in the Iceland for the past 100 years. Different types of motorcycles from across, artifacts and objects related to history of the motorcycles in the Iceland are found in this stunning 800 sq. meter building, which was designed specifically to be a museum.

The Municipal Library

This Municipal Library of Akureyri is one of the largest libraries found in Iceland. The library is located in beautiful recently renovated building in Brekkugata 17. This library gives all forms of the traditional library services including books, audio books, magazines, CDs and DVDs among others. The library has an open-wireless network for guests and also an internet able to be accessed by the public computers for just a little cash. There you will be able to call home your home through the Skype or even upload some of your camera photos, and also check your emails. This library has also a cafeteria where you can buy lunch at a very reasonable price and also cakes and coffee. The library is usually open as from 10am-7pm during weekday, in winter is opens on Saturdays also from 12pm-5pm. In the summer it opens from 10am-7pm during weekdays, and is closed in weekends. This library is just a few minutes’ walk from the town.

You will also find a small gift shop in this library where you can do your shopping. Some of the restaurants that offer good food in Akureyri include Rub 23, Strikid, Noa Seafood, Bautinn, 1862 Nordic Bistro is a fantastic restaurant located in Hof Cultural Center,Backpackers café among others.
